WoW Classic Engineering Guide

WoW Classic Engineering is one of the best professions for pvp and raiding. It is also one of the most expensive to level.

This guide will take you from Apprentice Engineering through Journeyman Engineering. It will require a lot of copper bars and rough stone. You will also need weak flux, which can be purchased from engineering supplies vendors in major cities.

Leveling

Engineering is one of the most fun professions to level in WoW classic but it also requires a lot of gold. This guide will show you how to get from 1 to 300 Engineering quickly and efficiently, and without having to buy any expensive items on the auction house. It also pairs well with Mining, so you can collect most of the needed materials yourself instead of relying on the auction house.

To start, you will need a few ingredients. The first step is to make a few copper tubes and some copper bolts. You will also need some weak flux, which can be purchased from a blacksmithing or engineering supplies vendor found in any major city. You will need about 20 of each of these items to reach level 35 engineering. After that, you will need to craft a few more rough blasting powder. You can stop at 35 engineering if you want but it is better to keep crafting until you have 60 of these, since they will be used for later recipes.

The rest of the recipes are geared toward making PvP items. Some of these items will be directly useful for PvP such as grenades and bombs, while others will provide components necessary to create them. As you reach higher levels, you will be able to craft more and more complex devices, as well as the materials required to make them.

Materials

Engineering is one of the professions that requires the most materials to level. It’s not for the faint of heart, and tinkerers should gather all the materials they need before starting to power level their Engineering skill. The more they have on hand, the less back and forth between their bank and their character.

Engineering allows for a very fun gameplay style, with the potential to create bombs and other mechanical devices that allow for crowd control or utility in both PvE and PvP. Whether you like to cackle maniacally while throwing dynamite at mobs or creating mechanical pets, Engineering is the perfect profession for you.

To start, here is a complete list of all the materials you will need to level engineering from 1 to 300 in vanilla WoW classic (excluding the recipes added by Season of Discovery). Each 75 levels will be split into their own material lists, but this master list should contain everything you will need to get to 300. Keep in mind that these materials are estimates, and you may need more if you don’t have luck with yellow recipes.

Recipes

A tinkerer’s profession, Engineering allows you to create gadgets that can be used to help your character in battle with items like dynamite and rocket boots. It also offers other helpful items like goggles, tools, and weapons as well as crafting nifty mounts. Engineering is one of the most underrated goldmaking professions and once WotLK launches there will be a lot of recipes to make money with.

The first recipe you need is coarse blasting powder which goes green at about level 75. Stone is generally cheap, so you can make a bunch of it and sell it later for extra gold. The next item to make is copper bolts, which will get you to about level 95 engineering. You will also need weak flux, which can be purchased from an engineering supplies vendor in major cities.

Finally, you need to make arclight spanners, which are required for many of the higher level recipes in this guide. Once you have all of these components, you can make the first step of your grenade launcher.

At Engineering level 200 you can choose to specialize in either gnome or goblin engineering. Gnomish is good for goldmaking, but goblin is a better choice for some recipes as they require goblin sapper charges which are the best DPS consumable in the game.

Specializations

Engineers can craft a variety of gadgets and utility items to make life in WoW Classic easier. Guns and ammunition for hunters, a wide array of explosives, and powerful trinkets are some of the many options engineers have available to them.

Once players reach Engineering skill 200 and character level 30, they can choose to specialize in Gnomish or Goblin Engineering. This choice will affect the types of items they can craft, but it’s not mandatory. Generally speaking, gnome engineering focuses on more utility-oriented items (like the shrink ray) while goblin engineering is better for PvP as they can craft explosives like the Global Thermal Sapper Charge.

However, many of the recipes crafted by one specialization can be created by another and are therefore not restricted to either specialty. However, some of the more special items like the Gnomish Cloaking Device and Goblin Rocket Helmet require the specific engineering specialization to create.

Additionally, the Season of Discovery made it possible for Engineers to change specializations without completing the old-fashioned quest chain. To do so, head to Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris and find Narain’s hut inside. There you will find a book called “Soothsaying for Dummies” which can be read to allow you to change specializations at any time, though you will lose all of your engineering-specific schematics when doing so.
